For karmic, we're still suffering from poor performance on rotational
hard drives.  If you have one, you can try:

 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-boot/ppa
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

(that should install a new kernel package, and a new ureadahead package)


Usual two reboots to get the benefit; on the Mini 10v this reduces *HDD*
boot time to 30s - some are reporting >1 minute improvements on the
slowest laptops.
